California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS) is the largest teachers’ retirement system and second largest public pension fund in the nation. MTA was awarded the project after a formal bid process because of the durability and flexibility of our products, along with the design creativity and experience of our team. This was a LEED project and a WELL building, which required stringent environmental product standards that MillerKnoll products were able to meet and exceed. CalSTRS Chief Investment Officer, Christopher Ailmana, stated, “A new, expanded headquarters facility allows us to grow, attract, and retain talent.” A key goal for CalSTRS was talent acquisition.

This was a collaborative design build project including ZGF Architects, DPR Construction and Ridge Capital to design and deliver a Zero Net Energy (ZNE) sustainable building. MTA specified furniture along with selecting fabrics and finishes for all FF&E in the building. This amazing space faced unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain disruptions. These issues caused major construction delays, resulting in extreme project delays, and pushing the planned furniture installation date. MTA responded proactively by working diligently with various manufacturers and carriers. We successfully rescheduled all product orders multiple times, even coordinating direct shipments to arrive at night to minimize disruptions to construction deliveries and redirecting remaining orders to the MTA warehouse. We our MTA crew to work after hours and over the weekend, avoiding potential fees and project shutdown risks. The adept handling of these challenges demonstrates our exceptional project management skills, agility, and resourcefulness. We are steadfast in delivering successful outcomes in the face of adversity.

“CalSTRS selected MTA as their furniture vendor in 2018 to assist in the Headquarters Expansion Project and it has been an incredible joy to work with them over the last few years. Their thoughtfulness and attention to detail has really helped make this project a success. Eric Rennie, Rachael Bennett & Jeana Revilla took the time from the very beginning to understand our needs and desires for the new space and delivered on every aspect. When faced with the challenges of the 2020 pandemic, they were ahead of the game with space plan studies and solutions and calmly guided us through alternative workplace solutions and helped us plan for an unknown future at the time – all while keeping us within budget. This is a firm we selected in 2018 who turned into friends, now turned into part of the CalSTRS family. We can’t thank MTA staff and installation crew enough for their hard work, professionalism, and the positive attitude they bring to the job site every day. THANK YOU!”
